Here's a rundown from Craig of how he geared up for his "Up in the Air for Kids" event:
I called and visited businesses in the area, asking for cash donations in exchange for advertisement during our events. There wasn't much luck due to the economy. I had one business donate helium for the 3-foot balloons that I flew to draw more attention.
I sent out the media release to all the possible newspapers and TV channels and also talked to our local Christian radio station. I got coverage on a couple of newspapers, a radio station, and a great commercial on the Christian radio station.
My "home" was on our flat roof closest to the road. I built a platform made out of pallets and plywood to allow water to go under and also to provide a place to strap the tent down to. I made a pulley system as well.
During the time of being "Up in the Air" every night, we had "boxed dinners" for people to stop by and purchase. The people who helped us with this by cooking were not obligated to donate, but of course they did.
On Saturday (the day I was to come down) we held our annual "Fallapalooza." We had inflatables, carnival games, food, and lots of candy. We were able to get the local fire department to get me down via a ladder truck. That was very effective. The only regret was not asking them sooner in order to advertise that fact.
We did relatively well [in raising funds]; we have gotten about $2,200 so far. I normally would not be happy with that, but it's the first time I did it, and we are in a small community.
