The Big Snake
“Don’t walk on that road!” the people in a village in Egypt said. “Don’t even
drive on it. It’s not safe!”
For some time, the people were afraid to travel on the main road that led in
and out of their village. A huge, nine-foot snake had been terrorizing them.
The snake was often seen on the main road, so everyone was afraid to travel in
or out of the village.
Several miles away, missionary Mabel Dean and some of her workers got into
a rented taxi and began the drive toward that village. They didn’t know about
the big snake that had the villagers living in fear. They didn’t know that it was
not safe to drive on that road.
As they neared the village, there was the huge snake in the middle of the road! “What should we do?” the workers asked.
The driver of the taxi didn’t even stop; he just drove right over that snake.
Then he backed up and drove over it again. The snake rose up and beat its
enormous head and tail against the sides of the car. The driver kept driving
over it, again and again.
Finally the snake was dead. The missionary’s workers and the driver of the taxi
got out and lifted up the big, heavy snake. They draped its long body over the
hood of the car and drove into the village.
The villagers gathered around the car, thankful to see that their dreaded enemy
was dead. Because the missionary and her workers had killed the snake, a
large crowd came to hear their message. They learned that Jesus died for their
sins and that they could be saved. Many were saved that day, and a church was started in that village.
Missionary Mabel Dean spent almost 40 years as a missionary in Egypt. During
all that time, she felt God’s hand on her, protecting her, healing her, and guiding
her. She wrote in a letter to a friend, “God has spared my life at least ten
times since I came to Egypt.”
