The Mysterious Guard
Mariel*, a Christian worker in Hong Kong, severely injured her back and was
in severe pain for several days. Five days after the injury, the pain was so bad
that she could not even straighten her legs. Muscle spasms and excruciating
pain went through her body. She and her husband Steven spent most of the
afternoon, on a Tuesday, praying for relief. Only after three hours of prayer was
there enough relief for her to even sit up again.
Every Wednesday morning, Mariel goes to a Bible study in a church in Hong
Kong. After spending three hours in prayer the Tuesday before, Mariel felt she
could go ahead and attend the Bible study and have the ladies there pray for
her healing. That Wednesday morning, she was able to walk slowly, but there
was still a lot of pain.
As Mariel left her apartment that morning, she walked very slowly down the
hall toward the elevator. Several guards and other workers stood around, as
they always do. But this particular morning, there was one guard whom she
had never seen before.
The new guard greeted her and said, “You have hurt your back, haven’t you?”
She nodded. The guard then showed her several ways that she could protect
her back while walking and moving. Then he told her to have a good day, and
he started walking away.
As Mariel continued toward the elevator, she heard the guard say, “Trust in
God. Walk in your healing.” She turned to thank him again, but no one was
there. As Mariel walked on, she could feel the pain gradually starting to leave.
Later, the women at the Bible study did pray for Mariel, and over the next few
days her back got better each day. The amazing thing is that neither Mariel
nor her husband ever saw that guard again.
Both Stephen and Mariel have walked throughout the apartment complex
without finding him. They believe that on that Wednesday morning, God sent
a special messenger—an angel—to them with a promise of healing.
