Rescued from the Well
Hollie tumbled 30 feet into the deep, dark well. Her skin scraped against the jagged wall. Splash! She hit the cold, cold water. The water was deep and the well was dark. Hollie was frightened. Worse yet, she couldn't swim.
Hollie's family had come to visit a pastor on his farm in southern Austria. While her parents stayed inside the pastor's house to have coffee, seven-year-old Hollie and her five-year-old brother Greg Jr. played outside.
"Let's climb this tree!" Greg Jr. said, jumping up toward the lowest branch. But he was too small to reach it.
"Let me try," Hollie said. She jumped and jumped, but she could not reach the lowest branch.
"Hey, look, there's a box," Hollie said. "If we stand on the box, we can reach the branch."
Hollie went to get what looked like a wooden box. But it was not a box; it was the cover of a well. As Hollie pushed and lifted it, the cover moved, and Hollie fell headfirst into the water.
From inside the house, Hollie's parents could hear Greg Jr. screaming. Their father, missionary Greg Mundis, ran outside and grabbed Greg Jr., thinking he had been bitten by a dog or a snake. Greg Jr. was too terrified to talk, so the father began looking for Hollie.
Then he saw the open well. Peering down into the darkness, he saw two little eyes. Hollie's father climbed down into the well, grabbed hold of Hollie, and pulled her up to safety.
Hollie's clothes were torn and her skin was badly scraped, but she was remarkably calm.
"Daddy, I was afraid when I was under the water," Hollie said. "Then a voice said to me, 'Don't be afraid, Hollie. I am with you. You will come to the top of the water. You will be able to grab a little rung that is in the wall.' When I came up, the rung was right there. I reached out and grabbed it."
Hollie continued, "Then the voice said to me, 'Just wait there, honey. Your daddy will be here in a second."
Missionary Greg held her close, thanking God for His hand on her life. Hollie's family believes God sent an angel to speak to her in the well. The information for this story came from Moving Mountains and is used with permission from Assemblies of God World Missions.
