Safety, Health, and Liability Issues

Screening Volunteers

The national BGMC ministries strongly recommends that ...

(1.) All persons should be screened before serving as a BGMC leader. Screening should include, at a minimum:

• A criminal background check, including a national criminal file and a 50-state sex offender registry search.

• At least two references, preferably from churches or other child-serving institutions in which an applicant has worked with minors.

(2.) Every children's ministry / BGMC ministry should implement a “two-adult” policy prohibiting individual boys and girls to be alone, and unsupervised, with a single leader.

(3) A “six month” policy requiring persons to have been a member of the church for a minimum of six months before being considered for serving as a volunteer children's church / BGMC leader.

Additional specific leadership requirements for local groups are determined by the pastor and the church’s leadership team. Each church is responsible for screening and approving adult leaders who work with minors.
